Today is International Transgender Day of Remembrance. Why? Did you know that the bulk of the violence towards the LGBTQ community is directed at transgender women? Whether it’s school ground bullying from students and teachers, Republican House of Representative members, employers, the violence perpetrated against this community must end.
I’ve invited Helena Anya Zeitgeist who has made the transition to talk to us about the transition and what she faces on a daily basis–even in the supposedly accepting San Francisco Bay Area–which one would think would be a sanctuary against such violence. Here’s a piece she wrote about the experience:
Ashes to Hope by Helena Anya Zeitgeist
There once was this city, so successful in the American Dream, filled with wealth, but lacking in humanity. One day, it was destroyed by an atomic bomb, everything leveled to a wasteland. But out from the wreckage, a little girl emerges; no hand to pull her up, no angel to cry for her soul. She cried and cried for years until one day she cried no more. On that day, she resolved to rebuild the city, not in the way it was before, but in her own image. Brick by brick, she slowly rebuilt until her endeavor was finally complete, and she looked upon her work with a satisfied smile. While it was not as grand as its predecessor, and perhaps it would never be, it was built completely be her, and she alone would rule as queen.
I never grew up, but I became Lady Zeitgeist, for my true life began five years ago when I began to live as me, pursuing my passion for music, and not living inside the walking costume I had been expected to be. Becoming myself came with greater tribulation than I expected; however I earned the greatest treasure: living my life completely as me. Through my darkest times, I learned the importance of believing in the impossible, the preciousness of the loving emotional bonds we encounter, and the beauty of standing back up after falling. From the streets to the stage, I overcame every obstacle thrown my way, gaining my strength from Lady Zeitgeist, always remembering that every day is mine to win.
