NEDA and Proud2BeMe Challenge

We are never alone. It might feel that way sometimes, but there is always someone else going through the same trials. Maybe we just haven’t connected yet.

So, dear Girl Body Pride community, let me introduce you to the Proud2BeMe Three Day Challenge. Their tagline is Building a Nation Where Confidence Rules. I’m all for that kind of party. The 3 day challenge runs from October 11-13 and is a wonderful reminder that we are not alone in our efforts to remind the world that we are beautiful just the way we are.  So I encourage you to sign up for for Proud2BeMe challenge, like their , follow them on and , and support Girl Body Pride in our efforts to build bridges to other communities promoting body positive initiatives.

Proud2BeMe is the National Association of Eating Disorder’s partner site for and by young people promoting healthy attitudes towards body image, weight, and food. As a forever recovering bulimic, this one speaks to the heart.

Day 1:

So join me on October 11 by pledging to show the real you.

I pledge to post images of myself on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr) that are reflections of the REAL me, not a Photoshopped idea of what beauty should look like. I will not alter the color or shape of my face or body to be more magazine “perfect.” I will be myself. I will be #Proud2Bme.

Day 2:

October 12 is the day to call out the “Media Body Snarksters” on calling out celebrities for wrinkles, pimples, weight gain, and bad hair days. Bodysnarking isn’t entertainment.  I may not fully agree with NEDA on this one when they refer to the practice as bullying, but I do certainly believe it is a triggering factor for many when it comes to eating disordered behaviors, loss of confidence, and self-damaging thoughts.

Whatever you call it, it’s gotta stop.

To participate, simply click on any (or all) of the tweet-ready messages directed at tabloids like Star Magazine to celeb bloggers like Perez Hilton simply asking them to reconsider the ramifications of their actions. I’m ready to hit send on tweets like this one. Are you?

Hey Bodysnarking isn’t entertainment. Will you stop hating on “flaws” & start promoting body confidence? #proud2bme

Day 3:

October 13 is the day to spread the love, ladies. Share a social-media ready Proud2BeMe compliment on Facebook or tweet a friend you think needs the pick-me-up. The messages are inspiring and I promise will bring a smile to your respective communities or the one you singe out for the love you are sharing. Like this one:

And if you happen to live in or are anywhere near Tampa, Florida on October 13, be sure to sign up for the 2012 Proud2BeMe Summit. The keynote speaker is none other than 14-year–old blogger Julia Bluhm, who started the petition to Seventeen asking them to stop using Photoshop to digitally alter their models. She got 85,000 signatures on her petition, and an announcement from Seventeen editor-in-chief Ann Shoket that the magazine will not alter models’ faces or bodies with Photshop.

How’s that for a reminder that we can all make a difference?
